Conservation Minnesota is focused on solving problems that are most important to Minnesotans. We have asked tens of thousands of people about their conservation priorities and listened to their concerns. Their diverse interest in issues like renewable energy, recycling, and wildlife converge and connect in three key themes that guide our work.
Pure Lakes, Rivers, and Drinking Water
A point of nearly unanimous agreement among Minnesotans is the importance of protecting our state’s waters. With almost 12,000 lakes, Lake Superior, the Boundary Waters, Voyageurs National Park, and the headwaters of 3 major river systems, Minnesota is defined by its relationship with water. Clean water is the key to Minnesota’s future. Our health, our economy, and our way of life depend on it. Conservation Minnesota is working to achieve our Clean Water Promise, a set of clear and achievable goals to ensure the quality and quantity of our state’s waters.
Healthy Kids and Families
We consistently hear from Minnesotans who are concerned about the impact that pollution and toxic chemicals are having on our health, and particularly the health and development of young children. Whether it is mercury from burning coal, or lead and formaldehyde in children’s products, parents and grandparents want reliable information and common sense approaches to reduce risk for their families.
A Legacy for Generations
In 2008, Minnesotans voted overwhelmingly to increase their own taxes to clean up polluted waters, conserve wildlife habitat, provide access to parks and trails, and preserve our state’s cultural and historical treasures. This was a bold public statement about the Minnesota we want to deliver to future generations. Conservation Minnesota is committed to protecting these voter approved funds from misuse, and upholding the ideals and common values of the Legacy Amendment in all government decisions.
To achieve these important goals, we are building a truly statewide community of Minnesotans willing to stand up for our lakes, families, and futures. Our network has grown from 5,000 to over 50,000 in just two years. We have members in every county with 47% living outside the metro area. We are also building a statewide team of community coordinators to engage and mobilize this ever-growing network, providing them with the information, tools, and opportunities necessary to make a difference.
The foundation for our programs is built on more than a decade of innovation. We have developed a new and more effective approach to public engagement that you won’t find at any other non-profit organization.
