On July 4, heavy rains in central Texas caused the Guadalupe River to flood, with the National Weather Service reporting the river reached its second-highest level on record—rising more than 26 feet in just 45 minutes. At least 135 people died, including more than 35 children.
WCK served more than 45,000 hot meals and sandwiches to children and families at Camp Mystic and other reunification centers, as well as to first responders and residents whose homes were impacted by the floods. The meals were distinctly Texan– BBQ, steak and potatoes, Tex Mex dishes, and hearty suppers.
Beyond meals we also provided $50,000 in HEB grocery gift cards to local residents who lost their employment at impacted businesses due to the flooding.
